Muscles Of The Gluteal Region Flashcards
Piriformis
Compartment - deep compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - anterior surface of the sacrum
Insertion - greater trochanter of femur
Action - lateral rotation and abduction of the hip joint
Innervation - nerve to piriformis
Obturator Internus
Compartment - deep compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - pubis + ischium at the obturator foramen, and the medial surface of the obturator membrane
Insertion - greater trochanter of femur
Action - lateral rotation and abduction of the hip joint
Innervation - nerve to obturator internus
Superior Gemelli
Compartment - deep compartment of the thigh
Origin - gluteal surface of the ischial spine
Insertion - obturator internus tendon
Action - lateral rotation and abduction of the hip joint
Innervation - nerve to obturator internus
Inferior Gemelli
Compartment - deep compartment of gluteal region
Origin - ischial tuberosity
Insertion - obturator internus tendon
Action - lateral rotation and abduction of hip joint
Innervation - nerve to quadratus femoris
Quadratus Femoris
Compartment - deep compartment of thigh Origin - ischial tuberosity Insertion - intertrochanteric crest of femur Action - lateral rotation of hip joint Innervation - nerve to quadratus femoris
Gluteus Minimus
Compartment - superficial compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - gluteal surface of ilium between inferior and anterior/middle gluteal line
Insertion - anterior side of greater trochanter
Action - abduction of the lower limb and medial rotation of the hip
Innervation - superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Medius
Compartment - superficial compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - gluteal surface of the ilium between the anterior/middle and posterior gluteal line
Insertion - lateral surface of greater trochanter
Action - abduction of lower limb, medial rotation of the hip
Innervation - superior gluteal nerve
Tensor Fascia Lata
Compartment - superficial compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - anterior iliac crest on the anterior iliac spine
Insertion - iliotibial tract
Action - abduction of the lower limb and medial rotation
Innervation - superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Maximus
Compartment - superficial compartment of the gluteal region
Origin - lower surface of sacrum, posterior surface of ilium behind the posterior gluteal line, and lateral surface of coccyx
Insertion - iliotibial tract + gluteal tuberosity of the femur
Action - extension of the thigh, lateral rotation
Innervation - inferior gluteal nerve
