Muscles Of The Gluteal Region Flashcards
Origin and insertion of gluteus maximus
- Origin: 1) Gluteal surface of the ilium behind the posterior gluteal line
2) Back of lateral mass of sacrum
3) Back of sacrotuberous ligament
- Insertion: 1) Deep ¼ into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur
2) Superficial ¾ into the posterior border of the Iliotibial tract
Nerve supply of gluteus maximus
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1 & S2)
Action of gluteus maximus
- Powerful lateral rotator of the thigh
- Strong abductor of the thigh
- Main extensor of the hip joint especially when force is needed e.g running, rising from sitting position, climbing up the stairs
- Tightens Iliotibial tract which helps to extend the knees and steady femur on tibia
From below
- Helps raise body from stooping position (acting with hamstring)
Mention structures deep to the gluteus maximus
Bony parts
Is greater trochanter going to ischial tuberosity?
- Back of ilium and spine
- Greater trochanter
- Gluteal tuberosity
- Ischial tuberosity
- Ligaments*
- Sacrotuberous ligament
- Sacrospinous ligament
- Back of capsule of hip joint
- Muscles
Other 2 gluteus muscles pray on adding quadri’s hamsters
- Gluteus minimus
- Gluteus maximus
- Piriformis
- Obturator internus + 2 gemellus muscles
- Ischial part of adductor magnus
- Quadratus femoris
- Origin of hamstring muscles from ischial tuberosity
Vessels (aa & vv)
- Superior gluteal vessels
- Inferior gluteal vessels
- Internal pudendal vessels
Nerves
- Sciatic nerve
- Nerve to obturator internus
- Nerve to quadratus femoris
- Post cutaneous nerve of thigh
- Pudendal nerve
- Superior & inferior gluteal nerve
Bursae
- Bursae on greater trochanter
- Bursa on ischial tuberosity
- Bursa on upper part of vastus lateralis muscle
Origin & Insertion of Psoas major m
Origin: * Anterior & lateral borders of all the lumbar transverse processes
* Side bodies of the last thoracic vertebra and all lumbar vertebrae
Insertion
* Forms iliopsoas tendon with the iliacus and inserts into the greater trochanter.
