Muscles of the Face Flashcards
What is the Orbicularis Oculi?
A muscle of the eye that is responsible for closing the eyelids
What is the function of the Orbicularis Oris?
controls movements of the mouth and lips.
-Specifically, it encircles the mouth, originating in the maxilla (upper jaw and palate) and mandible (lower jaw) bones. The muscle inserts directly into the lips.
What does the Levator Labii Superioris do?
Raises the upper lips
-is used when a person makes facial expressions. It is shaped like a broad, flat sheet that starts next to the nose and extends to the zygomatic bone, which is more commonly referred to as the cheekbone
What is the Depressor Labii Inferioris
a four-sided facial muscle located in the jaw area that draws the lower lip down and to the side.
Where is the Mentalis, and what does it do?
Muscle located in the chin that is responsible for causing wrinkles in the skin of the chin
Zygomaticus Major function
muscle is a muscle that controls facial expression, drawing the mouth’s angle upward and outward.
Zygomaticus Minor function
elevates the upper lips
Depressor Anguli Oris function
The depressor anguli oris muscle is associated with frowning, as it works to pull down the edges of the lips.
Buccinator action
compreses the cheek against the teeth
-pucker
Frontalis action
forehead, raises eyebrow, facial expressions
Temporalis
Origin, insertion, and action
Origin: temporal bone
Insertion: coracoid process of the mandible
Action: Elevates the mandible
Masseter
Origin, insertion, and action
Action: elevates the jaw
Origin: zygomatic arch
Inserts: ramus of the mandible
Medial Pterygoid
Superficial Head Origin
Tuberosity of the maxilla
Medial Pterygoid
Deep Head origin
medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate and palatine bone
Medial Pterygoid
insertion
Medial surface of ramus and angle of the mandible`
Medial Pterygoid Actions
- Together they elevate and protract the mandible.
- Individually they move the mandible side to side
Lateral Pterygoid
Superior head origin and insertion
Or.: Greater wing of the sphenoid bone
In.: Condyle of the mandible and temporomadibular joint
What is the temporomandibular joint?
the hinge joint between the temporal bone and the lower jaw.
Lateral Pterygoid
Inferior head origin and insertion
Origin: Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
Insertion: Condyle of the mandible and temporomadibular joint
Lateral Pterygoid Actions
- Together they protract and depress the mandible.
- Indivudually they move the mandible side-to-side
Where is the hyoid bone located?
At the top of the airway
Hyoid bone attachments
Suspended by ligaments and tendons
Suprahyoid is important for _______?
Swallowing
Mylohyoid is in the ___?
Jaw
