CNS Flashcards
What is the brain’s function in the CNS?
Main control & coordinating center of the body
What are the major regions of the brain?
- Cerebrum
- Diencephalon
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
Where does conscious thought, intellectual functions, memory, and complex motor patterns originate?
The Cerebrum
The roof of the diencephalon is the ____?
Epithalamus
The floor of the diencephalon is the ____?
Hypothalamus
The Hypothalamus is involved with?
Emotions, autonomic functions, and hormone production
What does the mesencephalon process?
Visual and auditory information.
What does the mesencephalon generate?
Involuntary somatic motor responses.
What are the ventricles?
fluid filled cavities in the brain; have a complex arrangement in the developed brain
What is the function for Cerebrospinal fluid?
1) cushions delicate structures in the brain
2) supports the brain
3) and it transports nutrients, chemical messages, waste products.
What is the pons?
The pons is involved w/ somatic and visceral motor control, and it connects the cerebellum to the brainstem.
What is gray matter?
Gray matter is mostly cellular bodies of neurons and is mostly on the outside of the brain and core areas of the brain.
White Matter?
Mostly underneath the gray matter, and is made up of axons.
What are the meninges and the general purpose?
- Dura Mater, Arachnoid, and pia mater.
- It’s a 3 layer membrane b/w the brain and skull acting as a cushion
What is the Dura Mater?
- outer most, thickest layer.
- very resistant and tough
“Tough mother”
