Sternocleidomastoid

A

Origin: Manubrium of sternum; medial 1/3 of clavicle

Insertion: Mastoid process; lateral 1/2 of superior nuchal line

Action:

  • Unilateral action tilts head slightly upward and toward the opposite side; rotates head left/right.
  • Bilateral action draws head straight forward and down.
  • Aids in deep breathing when head is fixed
