Muscles of the Elbow Flashcards
Attachments of biceps brachii
O: short head – apex of coracoid process of scapula
Long head – supraglenoid tubercle of scapula and adjacent glenoid labrum
I: posterior part of radial tuberosity
Nerve supply to biceps brachii
Musculocutaneous nerve – C5, C6
Action of biceps brachii
Flexion and powerful supination (when elbow flexed) of the elbow
Shoulder stabilisation and flexion
Function of biceps brachii
picking something up
Attachments of triceps brachii
O: long head- infraglenoid tubercle of scapula and adjacent glenoid tubercle, lateral head – above and lateral to spiral groove on posterior surface of humerus
Medial head - posterior surface of the humerus, below and medial to spiral groove
I: posterior proximal surface of olecranon of ulna and deep fascia of forearm.
Action of triceps brachii
extends elbow
long head adducts arm and extends from flexed position
Nerve supply of triceps brachii
Radial Nerve - C6, 7 and 8
function of triceps brachii
pushing up off chair
Attachments of pronator teres
O: humeral head - medial supracondylar ridge and common flexor originulnar head - pronator ridge on ulna
I: middle lateral radius
Nerve supply to pronator teres
median nerve - C6, C7
action of pronator teres
pronates and weak flexion of elbow
function of pronator teres
turning something over
Attachment of brachioradialis
O: upper 2/3rd of front of lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus
I: lateral surface of radius above styloid process
Nerve supply for brachioradialis
Radial nerve - C5, C6
Action of brachioradialis
Flexion of elbow, particularly in midpronation/ supernation
