Muscles Of Pelvic Floor And Perineum Flashcards
Insertion of Levator ani
Inner surface of coccyx, Levator ani of opposite side, and (in part) into the structures that penetrate it
Origin of Levator ani
Extensive linear origin inside pelvis from pubis to ischial spine
Action of Levator ani
Supports and maintains position of pelvic organs; resists downward thrusts that accompany rises in intrapelvic pressure during coughing, vomiting, and expulsive efforts of abdominal muscles; forms sphincters at anorectal junction and vagina; lifts anal canal during defecation
Innervation of Levator ani
S3, s4, and inferior rectal nerve (branch of pudendal nerve)
Origin of coccygeus
Spine of ischium
Insertion of coccygeus
Sacrum and coccyx
Action of coccygeus
Supports pelvic organs; supports coccyx and pulls it forward after it has been reflected posteriorly by defecation and childbirth
Innervation of coccygeus
S4 and s5
Origin of deep transverse perineal muscle
Ischial rami
Insertion of deep transverse perineal muscle
Midline central tendon of perineum; some fibers into vaginal wall in females
Action of deep transverse perineal muscle
Supports pelvic organs
Innervation of deep transverse perineal muscle
Pudendal nerve
Origin of external urethral sphincter
Ischiopubic rami
Insertion of external urethral sphincter
Midline raphe
Action of external urethral sphincter
Constricts urethra
