Muscles Of Mastication Flashcards
What is the insertion of the masseter?
Superficial head: angle of the mandible, inferior and lateral parts of the mandibular ramus
Deep head: superolateral mandibular ramus and coronoid process
What is the origin of the masseter muscle?
Superficial head : inferior border of the anterior 2/3 of the zygomatic arch
Deep head: medial border of the zygomatic arch and inferior border of the posterior 1/3 of the zygomatic arch
What is the action of the masseter muscle?
Elevate the mandible
What is the nerve innervation of the masseter?
Masseteric nerve of the mandibular anterior division of the trigeminal nerve
What is the origin of the temporalis muscle?
Entirely from the temporal fossa- along the interior temporal line including temporal fascia
What is the insertion of the temporalis muscle?
Coronoid process of the mandible
What action does the temporalis muscle do?
Elevates the mandible and the posterior fibers retrude the mandible
What innervates the temporalis muscle ?
Anterior and posterior deep temporal branches of the mandibular anterior division of the trigeminal nerve
What is the origin of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Superficial head: maxillary tuberosity and the pyramidal process of the palatine bone
Deep head: medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone
What is the insertion of the medial pterygoid muscle ?
Superficial head: medial surface of the ramus of the mandible and angle of the mandible
Deep head: medial surface of the ramus of the mandible and angle of the mandible
What is the action of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Elevates mandible, lateral extrusion of the mandible and protrudes mandible
What nerve innervates the medial pterygoid muscle?
The medial pterygoid branch of the anterior mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
What is the origin of the lateral pterygoid muscles?
Superior head: inferior surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone
Inferior head: lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
What is the insertion of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Superior head: articulate disc and capsule of TMJ
Inferior head: pterygoid fovea on the neck of the condyle of the mandible
What is the action of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Depress the mandible, protrude the mandible and lateral extrusion of the mandible
