Fascia Flashcards
Why do we have fascia?
To separate and envelope structures so they don’t fuse eg muscles bones vessels
What does fascia consist of ?
Layers of fibrous connective tissue
What is superficial fascia
Just deep to and attached to the skin
Allows the skin to move independently of deeper structures
Composed of fat and irregularly arranged connective tissue
Encloses muscles of facial expression
What is deep fascia?
Covers deeper structures of the body such as bones muscles
Consists of dense and inelastic fibrous tissue forming sheath around deeper structures
What is the deep fascia of the face and jaws?
Temporal fascia -temporalis muscle
to zygomatic arch
Masseteric-parotid fascia - surrounds salivary gland and over masseter muscle
Pterygoid fascia - medial pterygoid muscle
What are the layers of deep cervical fascia?
- investing layer - 1st layer surrounds neck , submandibular and parotid salivary gland , SCM and trapezius
- pre-tracheal- surrounds air and food passageway (trachea, esophagus, thyroid gland)
- pre-vertebral- deepest layer covering vertebrae, spinal column and associated muscles
- carotid sheath
What structures are encased by the carotid sheath
- internal jugular vein
- vagus nerve (10 cranial nerve)
- carotid artery
What are the carotid sheath layers?
Investing fascia
Pre tracheal fascia
Pre vertebral facia
What are fascial spaces ?
Potential spaces between various layers of the fascia, normally filled with loose connective tissue and bounded by anatomical barriers , usually bone muscle or fascial layers
How do we take care of an abscess?
Drain the abscess first because antibiotics won’t reach the site due to the connective tissue not being vascular
What is ludwigs angina ?
Bilateral swelling of the sublingual, submandibular and submetal fascial spaces. The risk of spreading to parapharyngeal and retropharyngeal spaces can be life threatening
What do you do if you see someone with ludwigs angina ?
Call 111 because respiratory problems occur and change rapidly
