Muscles of Facial Expression Flashcards
What muscle supplies the angle of the mandible?
Great Auricular nerve.
What muscles makes up the scalp, forehead and eyebrows?
Occipitofrontalis.
What is the function of occipitofrontalis?
Retract the scalp, elevate the eyebrows and wrinkle the forehead.
What muscles surrounds the eye?
Orbicularis Oculi.
What is the function of Orbicularis Oculi?
Palpebral part- close the eyes gently
Orbital part- close the eyes tightly.
What muscle surrounds the lips?
Orbicularis Oris.
What is the function of Orbicularis Oris?
Close and protrude the lips.
What nerves supply orbicular Oculi?
Temporal and zygomatic branches of facial nerve.
What nerves supply by orbicularis oris?
Buccal and marginal mandibular branches of facial nerve.
What muscle makes up the cheek?
Buccinator
What is the function of buccinator?
Keeps food on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and out of the oral vestibule.
What nerve innervates the buccinator?
Buccal branch of the facial nerve.
What muscles makes up the neck?
Platysma
What is the function of Platysma?
Tense the skin of inferior face/neck and depress the mandible.
What nerve supplies Platysma?
Cervical branch of facial nerve.
What are the five branches of the facial nerve?
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Marginal mandibular
Cervical
What is Bell’s palsy?
Any type of facial paralysis that does not have any other associated causes.
What are the potential causes of Bell’s palsy?
Infections
Otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear)
Diabetes
Trauma
Toxins
Temporarily by infiltration of LA to the facial nerve branches during dental treatment.
To cause facial palsy during an IDB injection, where would you have to inject?
Needle placed too far distally and LA injected into the parotid gland
Affects all 5 terminal branches of the facial nerve.
What symptoms would someone have if they had facial palsy?
Inability to close the eye or blink
Inability to raise corner of mouth or puff the cheeks
Inability to wrinkle forehead.
What is the management of facial palsy?
Protect the eye with a loose damp cotton wool pad
Reassure the patient that sensation will resolve.
