Muscles Connecting Trunk to UE (axio-appendicular) Flashcards
Proximal–> distal attachment of latissimus dorsi
Lower thoracic spinous processes, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest TO floor of the inter tubercular sulcus of the humerus
Innervation of latissimus dorsi
thoracodorsal nerve (C6, C7, C8)
Proximal–>distal attachments of levator scapulae
transverse processes of C1-C4 to the superior angle and superomedial border of the scapula
Innervation of levator scapulae
dorsal scapular nerve (sensory: direct branches of C3-4)
C4-C5
Actions of latissimus dorsi
adduction, extension, and medial rotation of humerus
actions of levator scapulae
elevation and downward rotation of scapula
proximal attachment–>distal attachment pectoralis major
from clavicle, costal cartilages, sternum, and aponeurosis of the external oblique TO the lateral lip of the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus
Action of pectoralis major
humeral adduction, flexion, and medial rotation, (sternocostal portion assists with extension of the flexed arm)
Innervation of the pectoralis major
medial and lateral pectoral nerves
clavicular head: C5-C6; sternocostal head C7- T1
Proximal–>distal attachment of pectoralis minor
outer surfaces of ribs 3-5 TO the coracoid process
Action of Pectoralis Minor
anterior tilt of scapula, depression of shoulder, forced inspiration
Innervation of pectoralis minor
medial and lateral pectoral nerves (same as major)
C5-T1
Proximal–>distal attachments of the rhomboids
major: spinous processes T2-T5 minor: ligamentum nuchae and spinous processes C7-T1 TO the medial border of the scapula
Actions of the rhomboids
scapular retraction, elevation, and downward rotation
Innervation of the rhomboids
dorsal scapular nerve (sensory: direct branches of C3-4)
C4-C5
Proximal–>distal attachments of serratus anterior
outer surfaces and superior borders of upper 8-10 ribs TO the costal surface of the medial border of the scapula
Actions of serratus anterior
shoulder protraction and upward rotation
Innervation of serratus anterior
long thoracic nerve
C5-7
Proximal–>distal attachments of subclavius
first rib and cartilage TO the undersurface of the clavicle
Actions of subclavius
depresses and stabilizes the clavicle
Innervation of subclavius
subclavian nerve
C5-C6
Proximal–>distal attachments of trapezius
superior nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, ligamentum nuchae, and cervical and thoracic spinous processes TO clavicle, acromion, and crest of the scapular spine
Actions of the trapezius
upper- scapular elevation
lower-depression of scapula
middle-retraction
upper/lower- upward and downward rotation of scapula
Innervation of the trapezius
spinal accessory nerve (CN XI; motor), and C3-C4 (sensory)
