Muscles And Movement Flashcards
Define abduction:
Moving away from the midline of the body
Define adduction:
Adding to the midline of the body e.g: swimmer bringing arms above the head before dive
Define flexion:
Angle of joint decreasing
Define extension:
Angle of joint increasing
Define plantar flexion:
Pointing toes down
Define dorsi flexion:
Pulling toes up
Define rotation:
Turning around an axis/ fixed point
Define circumduction:
Circular movement around the joint
Define antagonist:
The muscle that relaxes in a antagonistic muscle pair to allow for movement.
Define agonist:
The prime mover; the muscle that contracts.
Describe how antagonistic pairs bring about movement:
One muscle of the pair contracts to move the body part ( the agonist) the other muscle in the pair then relaxes ( antagonist) to return the body part back to the original position, this is repeated to perform types of movement of flexion and extension.
What happens when the gastrocnemius contract?
Planter flexion
What happens when the tibialis anterior contracts?
Dorsiflexion
What is the main muscle on the back?
Latissimus dorsi
