MUSCLES AND JOINTS THAT MOVES THE PECTORAL GIRDLE Flashcards
Sternoclavicular joint type and movement
synovial saddle joint
ant and post movement
protract and retract
sternoclavicular joint ligaments
interclavicular, costoclavicular and sternoclavicular
Acromioclavicular joint type and movement
Synovial plane joint
restriction to over-head arm movement
upward and downward rot
int. and ext. rotation
Scapulothoracic joint
physiologic articulation between the rib cage and the scapula
- protract and retract
- upward and down rot
- elevation and depression
Motions of the scapula
elevate, depress
adduct, abduct
upward and down rot
muscles involved in shoulder protraction
Serratus anterior
Pec maj
pec minor
muscles involved in shoulder retraction
Trapezius (middle part)
Rhomboids
Serratus Anterior
O: ext. surfaces of lateral ribs 1-8
I: Ant surfaces of medial border of scapula
Action: Protracts the scapula , rotates the scapula in upward direction
Inn: long thoracic nerve (C5,6,7 )
Pectoralis Major
O: Clavicular head and sternocostal head
I: Lateral lip of intertubercular groove of humerus
Action: Adducts and medially rotates the humerus
inn: lateral and medial pectoral nerves. (clavicular head C5,6) (sternocostal head C7,8, T1)
Pectoralis Minor
O: Ant surface of ribs 3,4,5
I: Coracoid Process of the scapula
Action: Protract the scapula , depress
Inn: Medial pectoral nerve (C8, T1)
Trapezius
O: upper - ext. occipital protuberance
middle- Spinous processes of 1st- 5th thoracic vertebrae
Lower- Spinous processes of 6-12th Thoracic vertebrae
I: upper- lateral 1/3 of clavicle and acromion process of scapula
middle- medial margin of acromion and superior lip of spine of scapula
Lower- Tubercle at the apex of the spine of scapula
Action: upper- elevate scapula
middle- retract scapula
lower- depress scapula
Inn: Spinal Accessory Nerves CN XI
Rhomboids
O: Spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae 2-5 (Major) and spinous process at C7 and T1 (Minor)
I: Major- fibrous attachment to the medial border of scapula between spine and inferior angle
Minor- medial border of scapula , at the root of spine of the scapula.
Action: Adducts and elevates the scapula , down rotation of scapula, Retract the scapula
Inn: Dorsal Scapular nerve (C4, C5)
Muscles involved in elevation of the scapula
Levator scapulae,
Trapezius (upper)
Rhomboids
Levator Scapulae
O: Transverse processes of C1-4
I: Medial border of scapula, between superior angle and root of spine
Action: Elevates scapula and assists with downward rot of scapula
Inn: Cervical 3,4 and dorsal scapular nerve C4,C5
Muscles involved in depression of the scapula
Trapezius (lower part)
Subclavius
Pec minor
