what are the types of bones
long, short. flat, irregular, sesamoid
long bones
have longitudinal axes and expanded ends
EX: femur, humerus
short bones
have equal lengths widths, found mostly within epiphysis
EX: Tarsals, Carpals
flat bones
plate-like structures with broad surfaces
EX: ribs, scapula
irregular bones
have a variety of shapes and most are connected to several other bones
EX: Vertebrae, Facial bones
sesamoid bones
develops within a tendon (connects muscle to bone)
EX:PATELLA
spongy bone
consists of numerous branching bony plates called trabeculae
compact bone
continuous bone with no gaps, found along outer edges
epiphysis
located at each end of the bone; articulates with another bone to form a joint
diaphysis
shaft of the bone
articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage coating around articulating ends of bone
periosteum
dense connective tissue that covers the bone
medullary cavity
hollow chamber within the diaphysis that houses bone marrow
