Muscles Flashcards
What are the three types of muscle?
Skeletal, smooth and cardiac
Cardiac muscle
Makes up the heart and has unique histological and physiological features.
Smooth muscle
Involuntary muscle
Found in walls of blood vessels, bowel, bladder, uterus etc
Controlled by autonomic nervous system
Skeletal muscle
Voluntary control
Move the skeleton
A skeletal muscle has 2 or more attachments to the bony skeleton usually with at least 1 joint between the attachments.
Contraction pulls the attachments closer together and hence cause a joint movement.
The Origin
The muscle attachment which moves the least is called the origin and the other end is called the insertion.
Tendons
Tendons is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone.
Types of skeletal muscle
- Fusiform - biceps
- Parallel
- Convergent
- Unipennate
- Bi/Multipennate
- Circular
