Muscles Flashcards
types of muscle (7)]
circular
convergent
parallel
unipennate
bipentate
fusiform
multipentate
circular muscle
e.g. sphincters, mouth etc.
convergent muscle
These are muscles where the origin is wider than the point of insertion. This fibre arrangement allows for maximum force production.
e.g. pectoralis major
parallel muscle
Parallel muscles are characterized by fascicles that run parallel to one another, and contraction of these muscle groups acts as an extension of the contraction of a single muscle fiber.
e.g. sartorius
unipennate
. A type of pennate muscle wherein the muscle fibers or fascicles are all in one side of the tendon. Supplement.
e.g. extensor digitorum longus
bipennate
Bipennate muscles have two rows of muscle fibres, facing in opposite diagonal directions, with a central tendon, like a feather. This allows even greater power but less range of motion.
e.g. Rectus Femoris.
fusiform
are those in which all the muscle belly fibers are arranged parallel to each other.
e.g. biceps brachii.
multipenate
A type of pennate muscle wherein the diagonal muscle fibers are in multiple rows with the central tendon branching into two or more tendons.
e.g. deltoid muscle
