Muscles Flashcards
1
Q
Type I “slow oxidative”
A
- extensive blood supply
- greater endurance
- low threshold for recruitment
- less powerful force production (postural control)
2
Q
Type IIa “fast fibers”
A
- oxidative
- high intensity
- fast contraction
3
Q
Type IIx/IIb “fast fibers”
A
- glycolytic
- short term
- higher intensity
4
Q
Concentric Contraction
A
muscle is shortening, bring elbow up
5
Q
Eccentric Contraction
A
muscle lengthening, controlling descent against gravity, lowering elbow
6
Q
Isometric Contraction
A
muscle holding load against gravity but not shortening/lengthening, holding elbow straight out
7
Q
Structure of Muscle
A
Fascicles -> muscle fibers -> myofibrils -> sarcomeres
sarcomere is made of myosin (thick filament) and actin (thin filament)
- Review Lecture 1, Slide 43 for picture
8
Q
Motor Unit
A
- comprised of motor nerve and muscle fiber
- large # fibers: quads, trunk muscles
- small # fibers: hands- fine motor
9
Q
Architecture of Skeletal Muscle
A
- name is often defining structure
- name of muscle gives away function/action
- ex: flexor digitorum profundus (profound= deep)
10
Q
Pennate
A
- feather like
- unipennate (extensor digitorum longus)
- bipennate (gastroc)
- multipennate (deltoid): more muscle fibers in small area can create more power
11
Q
Fusiform
A
- thick belly with tapered ends
- ex: biceps brachii
12
Q
Quadrate
A
- 4 equal sides
- pronator quadratus
13
Q
Circular
A
- surround an opening
- obicularis oris- eye
14
Q
Multi-headed
A
- biceps brachii and triceps
15
Q
Pennate Angle
A
- angle of pennation dictates physiological cross sectional area
- PCSA= force production
