muscles Flashcards
skeletal muscles
muscles that make things move, has multiple nuclei, voluntary, holds skeleton together, aids in movement and helps maintain body posture, striated and long
smooth
internam, two types (visceral and multi-unit), forms the stomach and intestines along with internal organs except the heart, not striated, contractions are involuntary and does not fatigue
cardiac
made of skeletal and smooth muscle, heart, red in color, responds to exercise, striated involuntary contractions done without building an oxygen debt
muscular system
largest tissue mass in the horse’s body, controls movement, performance of vital functions
cardiac muscle
involuntary, strongest muscle in the body, most important muscle
fast twitch
used for speed, fatigue quickly
slow twitch
resistant to fatigue, used for long, low power work and endurance.
brachiocephalicus
base of jaw to humerus. moves whole head side to side, swings legs forwar
splenius
turns and extends neck, makes up the top line if well developed
syssarcosis
the muscle connection between the thoracic limb and the body
trapezius
flat, sheetlike muscle that covers all thoracic vertebrae, lifts shoulder
masseter
opens and closes the jaw, allows chewing
rectus capitus
allows head to flex side to side
bicep brachii
flexes elbow
anterior and posterior pectoral
helps pull leg forward and backward, adducts the forelimb
extensor capri radialis
extends the knee
digital extensor
extends the carpus and digits
gluteus superficialis
from croup to sacrum, used in rearing, galloping and kicking
bicep femoris
from gluteals to patella and tibia, maintains hip joint in extension
latissimus dorsi
lower thoracic vertebrae, flexes the shoulder and pulls the foreleg back
intercostal
between ribs, aids in breathing
longissimus dorsi (lumbar muscle)
main muscle used in rearing, kicking, jumping and aids in turning. longest and strongest muscle in the body
semitendinosus
from bicep femoris to back of hindquarters, extends hip and hock joints
tensor fasciae latae
moves the stifle
