Muscles Flashcards
Origin of the deltoid
Lateral third of the clavicle, the acromion and the spine of the scapula.
Insertion of the deltoid
Deltoid tuberosity
Actions of the deltoid
All fibers abduct the shoulder, anterior fibers also flex, medially rotate and horizontally adduct while posterior fibers also extend, laterally rotate and horizontally abduct the shoulder.
Innervation of the deltoid
Axillary nerve
Origin of the latissimus dorsi
Inferior angle of the scapula, spinous process of the last 6 thoracic vertebrae, the last 3 or 4 ribs, the thoracolumbar fascia and the posterior surface of the iliac crest.
Insertion of the latissimus dorsi
Intertubercular groove of the humerus
Actions of latissimus dorsi
Medial rotation, adduction and extension of the shoulder at the glenohumeral joint.
Innervation of latissimus dorsi
Thoracodorsal nerve
Anatomical name for the shoulder joint
Glenohumeral joint
Handcuff muscles
Latissimus dorsi and teres major.
Origin of teres major
Inferior angle and lower third of the lateral border of the scapula.
Insertion of teres major
Crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerus
Actions of teres major
Medially rotates, adducts and extends the shoulder at the glenohumeral joint.
Innervation of teres major
Lower subscapular nerve
What do rotator cuff muscles have in common?
They all stabilize the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity.
Rotator cuff muscles
Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis
Origin of supraspinatus
Supraspinous fossa of the scapula
Insertion of supraspinatus
Greater tubercle of the humerus
Actions of supraspinatus
Abduct the shoulder and stabilize the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity.
Innervation of supraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Origin of infraspinatus
Infraspinous fossa of the scapula
Insertion of infraspinatus
Greater tubercle of the humerus
