Muscle Tone Flashcards
What is muscle tone
Continuous and passive partial contraction of muscles in the resting stage
What is postural control
Balanced tension of extensions and flexors
What is the muscle tone continuum
Flaccid, hypotonic, normal, spastic, rigid
What is cogwheel rigidity
Jerky type motion, down in degrees
What is lead pipe rigidity
Go through arc slowly
How do you test for spasticity
Quick stretch
What is a 0 on the modified ash worth scale for grading spasticity
No increase in tone
What is a 1 on the ash worth scale for grading spasticity
Slight increase
What’s a 2 on the ash worth scale for grading spasticity
Slight increase in tone manifested by a catch, followed by minimal resistance through less than half of the remainder of ROM
What is a 3 on the ash worth scale for grading spasticity
Marked increase in tone through most ROM; affected parts easily moved passively
What’s a 4 on the ash worth scale for grading spasticity
Considerable increase in tone; passive movement difficult
What’s a 5 on the ash worth scale for grading spasticity
Affected part rigid in flexed or extended position
What is decerebrate rigidity
UE and LE are in extension, addiction and internal rotation. Damage to brain stem. Wrists and fingers flexed, feet plantar flexed and inverted
What is decorticate rigidity
Damage to cerebral hemispheres. UE spasticly flexed and addiction. LE extended with IR and adduction. BEWARE OF HETEROTROPHIC OSSIFICATION
