What does the FIM do
Measures the level of DISABILITY in terms of how much assistance a caregiver will have to do (BURDEN OF CARE)
What does the FIM addresss
13 areas of motor performance for ADLs and 5 areas of cognition, communication, social interaction
What is the scoring for the FIM
7 (independent) to 1 (dependent)
What does a score of 7 mean
Independent, done within reasonable time and no cues for safety
What does a 6 mean
Modified independent; needs adaptive equipment, increased time, don’t technically have to use AT!
What does a 5 mean
IMPORTANT LEVEL; set up only , no one touches the patient, less than or equal to 10% verbal cues to complete safely; SET UP, SUPERVISION, STAND BY ASSIST
Any physical touch make the score fall to what automatically

What Does a 4 mean
Patient performs 75% or more of activity and requires minimal contact assistance; MINIMAL ASSISTANCE or CONTACT GUARD ASSISTANCE
What does a 3 mean
Patient performs 50-74% of activity; MODERATE ASSISTANCE
What does a 2 mean
Patient performs 25-49% of activity; MAXIMAL ASSISTANCE
What does a 1 mean
Patient performs less than 25%; TOTAL ASSISTANCE; or if an activity requires MORE THAN 1 HELPER
What does the irf-pai measure
Tally scores from 3 days of FIM; required by Medicare part A
