Muscle Tone Flashcards
1
Q
Normal muscle tone is characterised by which factors (7)
A
- Effective stabilisation at axial and proximal joints.
- Ability to move against gravity and resistance.
- Ability to maintain the position of the limb, if it is placed passively by the examiner & then released.
- A balance between agonistic and antagonistic muscles.
- Ability to shift from stability to mobility and to reverse.
- Ability to use muscles in groups or selectively with normal timing and co-ordination.
- A slight resistance in response to passive movement.
2
Q
Abnormal muscle tone (5)
A
- Flaccidity
- Hypotonus
- Hypertonus
- Spasticity
- Rigidity
3
Q
Which factors contribute to the increase of hypertonicity?
A
- Pressure sores
- Ingrown toenails
- Tight elastic straps on a urine collection bag
- Tight clothing
- UTI
- An obstructed catheter
4
Q
Modified Ashworth Scale
0= 1= 2= 3= 4=
A
0= No increase in muscle tone
1= Slight increase in muscle tone; catch and release or minimal resistance at the end of range of motion
2= Increase in muscle tone through most of range of motion.
3= Increase in muscle tone; passive movement is difficult
4= Affected part(s) are rigid in flexion/ extension.
