Muscle Tissue Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue in the human body?
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
What are the properties of skeletal muscle tissue?
- Elongated, cylindrical cells
- Striated
- MULTIPLE PERIPHERALLY LOCATED NUCLEI
- Voluntary movement of skeleton
Looking at a cross section of muscle tissue, what are the different layers?
Endomysium - each muscle fiber is covered by endomysium
Perimysium - these fibers group to form a fascicle which is wrapped by perimysium
Epimysium - Coating of the entire muscle
What is a sarcomere?
A basic contractile unit of muscle fibers
What is sarcolemma?
A specialised cell membrane which surrounds striated muscle fiber cells
What are the properties of cardiac muscle?
- Found only in the heart
- Specialised for continuous autonomous contractions
- Greater number of mitochondria
What is the structure of cardiac muscle?
- Elongated, branched cylindrical cells
- One or two centrally located nuclei
- Straited
What are the 3 layers in the heart wall?
Pericardium: Outer supporting tissue layer
Myocardium: Cardiac muscle tissue
Endocardium: single layer of endothelial cells
What are intercalated discs and in which muscle tissue are they found?
Cardiac
Found between myocardial cells of the heart and play a vital role of bonding them together as well as transmitting signals between them
What is the structure and properties of smooth muscle?
- Found lining hollow organs
- Specialised for continuous contractions (peristalsis)
- Small, elongated, spindle-shaped cells with tapered ends
- Single centrally located nuclei
- No sarcomeres hence no striations
What has to be present for a muscle to be striated in appearance?
Sarcomere
