Muscle System Flashcards
What’s striated muscles?
Allow intentional or voluntary movements. It’s attached to the Skelton so also know as skeletal muscle. It includes arms, hands, legs and diaghragm.
Multinucleus and striated
What are myocytes?
Individual muscle cells
What are the two types of striated muscle?
Slow twitch:
Fast twitch:
What’s cardiac muscle?
Branched striated muscle with single nucleus. Used in heart pumping.
What’s smooth muscle?
Not striated and it’s myocytes have single nucleus and are tapered
What makes the skeletal cell striated?
T-tubules make sure that action potential from nervous system reaches all the sarcomeres in a cell
What are myofibrils?
Series of connected sarcomeres that are surround by sarcoplasmic reticulum.
SR stores calcium so when an action potential reaches t-tubule, it release calcium to cause muscle contraction
How do muscles contract?
Via sarcomeres and it’s sliding filament mechanism (thick and thin)
What are thin and thick filaments made of?
They are made of actin and myosin respectively
What are slow (red) and fast twitch fibers?
Slow: Red muscle. responsible for high endurance activity, like running
Fast: white muscle. responsible for quick movements, like jumping
What’s oxygen debt?
Difference between oxygen needed and oxygen present
What are the two types of autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic Nervous system: flight or flight (Via Norepinephrine)
- Parasympathetic Nervous system: Rest and digest (Via Acetylcholine) - conserve energy
