Eukaryotic Cells And Membrane-bound Organelles Flashcards
What are some common organelles?
Nucleus
Endoplasmic reticulum
Golgi apparatus
Lysosomes
Peroxisomes
Mitochondria
Where’s ribosomal RNA made?
Nucleolus
What keeps the environment within nucleus separate from rest of the cell?
A double membrane called nuclear envelop
What do nuclear pores do?
They only allow certain materials to pass through in either direction
What are the types of endoplasmic reticulum?
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
What does rough endoplasmic reticulum do?
It has ribosomes that allow protein translation
What does Smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?
It lacks ribosomes. It’s job is to detoxify drugs and poisons, transport proteins from RER to Golgi apparatus and produce lipids
What happens to proteins made by RER?
They’re delivered to Golgi apparatus and might be modified by adding carbohydrates, phosphates, or sulfate
What do lysosome do?
Lysosome breaks down the bad substances and gets rid of the waste and dangerous materials to protect the cell
What do peroxisomes do?
They use hydrogen peroxide to breakdown long-chain fatty acids that are later used by cell to build phospholipids and sugars
How is Mitochondria (energy source that synthesizes ATP) reproduced?
It is unique as it contains its own genes and reproduce via binary fission
