Muscle Structure And Function - Week 16 PBL Flashcards
Three types of muscle in body?
Cardiac
Smooth
Skeletal (striated)
When are type 1, type 2a and 2B muscle fibres used?
Type 1 - aerobic exercise
2a - mixture of both
2B - anaerobic exercise
Which fibres allow more powerful contraction and why?
Type 2B - respire anaerobically, so produce energy quickly, although inefficient
Why are type 2B fibres white?
Lack of myoglobin due to mainly respire anaerobically
What type of athlete would have mainly type 2B muscle fibres?
Powerlifters
Why are type 1 fibres adapted to aerobic respiration?
High in myoglobin and mitochondria
Less fibres to a motor unit - less power and more precision
What type of athlete would have many type 1 fibres?
Marathon runners
