Muscle Structure Flashcards

Q

What does the skeletal muscle use as energy metabolism?

A
  • Creatine phosphate - fast energy from ATP, but lasts 1-2 seconds
  • glycolysis - energy from glucose in the absence of oxygen ( anaerobic metabolism)
  • oxidative phosphorylation - energy from glucose or fat in the presence of oxygen (aerobic metabolism)

Q

What is oxygen debt ?

A

Where the muscle uses more oxygen to produce the energy needed after the exercise has finished - to replenish muscle store of glycogen & CP & to remove lactic acid.

Q

Difference between cardiac & skeletal muscle

A

Contraction of cardiac muscle is dependent on extracellular Ca, skeletal muscle is not
Skeletal muscle has a very short action potential, tetanic contractions can occur, whereas, cardiac muscle has a very long action potential and tetanic contractions cannot occur
