Muscle Structure Flashcards
1
Q
What does the skeletal muscle use as energy metabolism?
A
- Creatine phosphate - fast energy from ATP, but lasts 1-2 seconds
- glycolysis - energy from glucose in the absence of oxygen ( anaerobic metabolism)
- oxidative phosphorylation - energy from glucose or fat in the presence of oxygen (aerobic metabolism)
2
Q
What is oxygen debt ?
A
Where the muscle uses more oxygen to produce the energy needed after the exercise has finished - to replenish muscle store of glycogen & CP & to remove lactic acid.
3
Q
Difference between cardiac & skeletal muscle
A
Contraction of cardiac muscle is dependent on extracellular Ca, skeletal muscle is not
Skeletal muscle has a very short action potential, tetanic contractions can occur, whereas, cardiac muscle has a very long action potential and tetanic contractions cannot occur
