Endocrine System Flashcards
Hypothalamus
Neurohomones that stimulate or inhibit anterior pituitary gland function
Anterior pituitary gland
ACTH, FSH, LG ,GH, PRL,TSH
Posterior pituitary
Secretes oxytocin - stimulates uterine contractions during birth & milk secretion after birth
Secretes antidiuretic hormone - increases water reabsorption in the kidneys
Pineal
Melatonin
Parathyroids
Parathyroid hormone _↑ blood calcium & stimulates the production in the kidneys of active form of vitamin D.
Thyroid
Thyroid hormone - regulates metabolic rate, growth & differentiation, makes calcitonin , which plays a role in calcium homeostasis.
Stomach & small intestine
Secrete gastrin , secretin & cholecystokinin that regulate pancreatic activity, facilitate digestion & control appetite.
Ovaries
Estrogens - estradiol & progesterone - control female reproduction
Testes
Androgens -testosterone, Control male reproduction
Pancreas
Insulin -↓ blood glucose & glucagon- ↑ blood glucose
Kidneys
Secrete erythropoietin - regulates maturation of red blood cells
Secrete enzyme renin which begins synthesis of hormone angiotensin II which helps maintain normal BP
Liver
Produces insulin- like growth factor 1, which controls growth of bones
Adrenal glands ( medulla & cortex)
Makes epinephrine & norepinephrine which mediate the fight or flight response.
