Muscle Physiology Flashcards
What is the function of T tubules?
To conduct stimulatory impulses
What is the role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
Sequestration of Ca2+
What function does titin have?
Maintaining functional integrity of myofibrils
How are each of the types of connective tissue found?
Endo: Between each MF
Peri: Binds MF to form fascicles
Epi: Binds fasciculi to form muscles
What type of muscle fibres are slow twitch and how do they get energy?
Type 1
Oxidative processes as have lots of mitochondria
Where would you find Type 1 muscle fibres?
Postural muscles
What type of muscle fibres are sensitive to fatigue? And how gain energy?
Type 2b
Glycolytic energy processes
How do type 2a muscle fibres gain energy?
Oxidative and glycolytic energy processes
Which muscle fibre would appear darker when stained?
Type1: Lots of fibrillar ATPase for oxidative energy processes and lots of mitochondria
What are the advs/disadvs of anaerobic metabolism?
Adv: Produce ATP in absence of O2
DisAdv: ATP yield low and toxic products are generated
What is the role of Creatine?
1) Ingested from diet and transported to muscles
2) Provides a readily source of energy in first few minutes of intense exercise
(Improve strength, increase muscle mass and quicker muscle recovery)
