MUSCLE OF THE KNEE Flashcards
what muscles make up the quadriceps?
rectus femoris
vastus lateralis
vastus intermedialis
vastus medialis
what is the action of the quadriceps?
knee extension
rectus femoris also causes hip flexion
what muscles make up the hamstrings?
semimembranosus
semitendonosus
biceps femoris
what is the action of the hamstrings?
hip extension and knee flexion
semimem and semiten also cause medial knee rotation
rectus femoris also causes lateral knee rotation
palpate rectus femoris
patient supine with hip extended over side of plinth
resist knee extension and hip flexion
palpate from AIIS (below and medial to ASIS) to the base of patella and tibial tubercle
palpate vastus medialis and lateralis
model in sitting
resist knee extension
palpate on relavent aspects of anterior thigh to base of patella and then to the tibial tubercle
ankle in dorsiflexion increase strength of contraction
palpate all three muscles
prone lying with knee flexed to 50
ask patient to extend hip
palpate from ischial tuberosity to lateral and medial tendons of the knee
palpate semimembranosus and semitendonosus
(as in palpation of the whole area) add medial rotation at the knee
palpate biceps femoris
(as in palpation of the whole area) add lateral rotation at the knee
function of quadriceps
raising the body when going from sit to stand
OR eccentrically from stand to sit
function of hamstrings
extension of hip for propulsion in walking
what are the attachments of rectus femoris
o: straight head- AIIS
reflected head - above acetabulus
i: base of patella
what are the attachments of vastus lateralis
o: inertochanteric line, lower border of greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera
i: base and lateral border of patella
what are the attachments of vastus medius
o: intertrochanteric line, linea aspera and superacondylar line
i: medial border of patella
what are the attachments of vastus intermedius
o: upper 2/3rd of anterior and lateral femur
i: base of patella with rectus femoris
what is the nerve supply to the quadriceps?
femoral nerve L2, L3 and L4
what are the attachments of semitendonosus?
o: medial ischial tuberosity
i: upper medial tibia behind gracilis and satorius
what are the attachments of semimembranosus?
o: lateral ischial tuberosity
i: medial tibial condyle
what are the attachments of biceps femoris?
o: long head- ischial tuberosity
short head -lower half of linea aspera
i: head of fibula
what is the nerve supply to the hamstrings?
sciatic nerve - L5, S1, S2
