Muscle/ Muscle cells Flashcards
What are muscles made up of?
Bundles of cells called muscles fibres
Muscles fibres and made of myofibrils
What are sarcomeres?
Sarcomeres are repeated units of actin and myosin filaments.
The actin is made of ____ ________
Thin filaments
The myosin is made of _____ __________
Thick filaments
How muscle contraction occurs
Muscle contraction occurs when the thin actin filaments move between the thick myosin filaments, shortening the length of the sarcomere.
-The myosin uses its myosin heads to join with the actins active sites and pull the actin towards the middle line of the sarcomere.
What is the edge of the cell called that separates sarcomeres?
Z line
What is the area that consists only of thin actin filament called?
I band
What is the area called that consists only of thick myosin filament called?
H zone
What is the area of overlapping thick and thin filament called?
A band
