Cell basics- Plant cells Flashcards
Define eukaryotic
A complex cell, with membrane bound organelles and a nucleus.
Function of the Cell wall?
It structures and supports the cell.
Function of the cell membrane?
Maintains shape, controls what enters and exists cell- vica versa
Function of chloroplast?
Conduct photosynthesis
Function of vacuole?
Stores cell sap. It also provides structure for the cell.
What does chloroplast consist of?
Chloroplast envelope, Grana(Where photosynthesis happens), Stroma (Colourless fluid surrounding the grana within the chloroplast.)
Function of tonoplast?
Membrane that surrounds the vacuole. Keeps vacuole acidic by bringing in protons.
Function of amyloplast?
Responsible for synthesis and storage of starch granules. Also converts starch back into sugar when the plant needs energy.
Function of plasmodesmata?
A channel through the cell wall that allows molecules and substances to move back and forth.
Function of pits?
Cavities in the cell wall of Xylem. Essential components in the water transport system.
What is the role of xylem in plants?
Xylem tissue is used mostly for transporting water from roots to stems and leaves but also transports other dissolved compounds.
What is the role of phloem in plants?
Phloem transports the products of photosynthesis, to where it is needed for other processes e.g. growing
xylem or phloem? Which requires energy and which is a physical process?
Xylem-Physical process
Phloem- Requires energy
