Muscle injury Flashcards
Basic grading system : Muscle strains
GRADE 1: MILD MUSCLE STRAIN
GRADE 2: MODERATE MUSCLE STRAIN
GRADE 3: SEVERE MUSCLE STRAIN
Explain Grade 1
small number muscle fibers torn. Mild discomfort, tenderness, minimal swelling or bruising. Pain typically after activity
Explain grade 2
large number muscle fibers are torn, but muscle not completely ruptured. Moderate pain during movement, noticable swelling + bruising, loss of strenght + limited ROM, pain with stretching
grade 3 muscle strain
complete rupture of muscle fibers. Severe pain at the time of injury, significant swelling and extensive bruising, complete loss of strength + inability to move the affected muscle
Clinical signs acute compartment syndrome
5 P’s
-pain
-pulse
-pallor
-parasthesia
- paralysis
Defintion of Hematoma
abnormal collection of blood outside of a blood vessel
2 types of hematoma
intra-muscular - blood within the intact muscle fascoa
inter-muscular - the fascia surrounding the muscle is torn + blood has free access to spread into the intersistial space
