Closed fractures
is one that does not cause a break in the skin
Open fractures
is one in which skin is punctured by bone
Green stick fracture
a fracture in which one side of the bone is broken while the other side is bent
like a green twig
mostly in children
Communited fracture
a fracture in which bone is broken, splintered or crushed into a number of pieces
Avulsion
Fracture which occurs when a fragment of bone tears away from main mass of bone
Fragment of bone is pulled away by tendon
Where do greenstick fractures commonly occur
1.) forearms ( radius/ulna) - from falls out onto stretched arms
2.) Clavicle (collarbone) - from falls or direct hits
3.) Humerus - less common can happen trauma
Why do green stick fractures commonly occur ?
childrens bones are softer + more flexible
kids more likely to fall or get injured playing
Adults rarely get green stick fractures as their bones are harder + more brittle
What are potential complications fractures
1.) death
2.) visceral injury
3.) soft tissue injury
4.) shock
5.) fat embolisim
6.) compartmental syndrome
7.) DVT
8.) Infection
