Muscle Disorders Flashcards
Rhabdomyolosis
Muscle breakdown resulting in the release of myoglobin into extracellular space & bloodstream
Resulting in myoglobinemia> myoglobinuria
Causes of Rhabdomyolosis
Trauma
Severe Compartment syndrome
Mediations
Infections/ inflammation
Rhabdomyolosis Clinical Manifestations
Most severe complication is acute kidney injury due to flow obstruction in the nephron
The classic triad of symptoms is:
Muscle pain
Weakness
Dark urine
Compartment Syndrome
Tissue pressure within a closed muscle compartment
Exceeds perfusion pressure muscle and nerve ischemia
↓ O2 & ↑ waste products pain & peripheral sensation
If untreated:
Muscles & nerves undergo ischemic necrosis
Limb contracture
Renal failure & death
Clinical Manifestations of Compartment (six P’s)
Pain (out of proportion to injury) Pressure (from swelling) Pallor Parasthesia Paresis Pulselessness
