What is polymyalfia rheumatic?
condition seen mainly in middle ages and elderly women resulting in aching pain around shoulder and pelvic girdles with stiffness and weakness
What is polymyalgia rheumatic due to?
giant cell arteritis
What may patients with GCA develop?
temporal arteritis - can lead to blindness if left untreated
What is fibromyalgia characterized by?
allodynia (heightened pain response to pressure) eg painful pressure points around neck, shoulders etc
What often co exists with fibromyalgia?
fatigue, sleep disturbance, numbness and paraesthesiae
Are there any diagnostic tests for fibromyalgia?
no
What is treatment of fibromyalgia?
analgesia, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, antiepileptics, dopamine agonists
Is fibromyalgia a predictor of good or bad out come after surgery?
bad
What does polymyositis affect?
muscles of shoulder and hup
What signs are seen in polymyositis?
elevated serum CK
EMG has abnormal pattern
muscle biopsy shows inflammation
What skin condition is polymyositis related to?
dermatomyositis
What is myositis ossificans?
condition where heterotopic ossification (bone forming outside of skeleton) occurs in muscles usually after an injury
need high strength NSAIDS or radiotherapy
