Elective Surgery Flashcards
Surgical management of an arthritic joint - what are the options?
- Arthoplasty/joint replacement (most successful are hip and knee)
- Excision or resection arthroplasty (removal of bone/cartilage from joint - effective for smaller joints)
- Arthodesis (stiffening/fusion of join in a position of function - cartilage removed and joint stabilized)
- Osteotomy (surgical realignment of bone to redistribute load across arthritic joint)
What will an Achilles tear require?
splintage
What will a quadriceps or patellar tendon tear require?
surgical repair
What requires tendon transfer?
tibialis posterior, extensor pollicis longus tear
