Muscle Development Flashcards
Stem cells that develop into muscle cells
Myoblasts
Once myoblasts form:
Groups of cells cluster together and fuse into one, large cell.
How many myoblasts typically fuse into one muscle cell?
100s of cells
the formation of myoblasts cause the new muscle cell to be:
multinucleate and long
Are muscle cells mitotically active?
no
During growth, muscle cells:
Grow in size but do not increase in number
Hormones that control cell growth:
1) growth hormone
2) estrogen
3) testosterone
4) myostatin
Purpose of myostatin
Limits muscle growth so that muscle size is appropriate
What are satellite cells?
Myoblasts, present in adults, that remain at the edges of muscle cells for repair.
Are satellite cells mitotically active?
yes
Purpose of satellite cells:
“fill in” damaged muscle to repair it
If damaged areas are large:
Connective tissue known as “scar tissue” will fill in the injury
Proper name for scar tissue:
fibrosis
