ATP generation Flashcards
Three methods of ATP generation
1) Creatine phosphate pathway
2) Anaerobic Respiration
3) Aerobic Respiration
Purpose of creatine phosphate pathway
Generates a small amount of ATP to constantly maintain muscle tone and prevent atrophy
Anaerobic respiration method
Sugar is broken down without the use of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration purpose
Gives a small amount of ATP rapidly
What is anaerobic respiration useful for?
Contractions of high intensity and short duration
Characteristics of muscles that use anaerobic respiration:
Light in color
have less mitochondria
Have fewer blood vessels
Byproduct of anaerobic respiration
Lactic Acid accumulates in the muscle and bloodstream
Lactic acid causes
Breathing rates and depths to increase
Contributes to soreness and fatigue
Why does lactic acid affect breathing rates?
Cause the pH of the brain to decrease
Aerobic Respiration method
Uses sugar (preferably glucose) and oxygen
Aerobic respiration purpose
Generates higher amounts of ATP that is good for long lasting contractions
Characteristics of muscles that use aerobic respiration
Have high amounts of blood vessels and mitochondria
Have high amounts of myoglobin
Muscle is a darker color
