Muscle Compressions Flashcards
Define muscle compression
Non gliding technique. Broad contact. Compression/pressure is applied for a few seconds before moving to in the other direction. Hands should slowly sink into the body tissue. think sink
When to use muscle compressions
A palpating assessment tool
General mobilization of soft tissu
Introductory and finishing technique
Local warm up prior to specific/deeper work
When applied quickly can be used as a pre event sports massage application.
Indications of Muscle Compressions
Local edema - not related to cardiac, liver or kidney disease
Muscle spasm
Muscle guarding
Muscular hypertonicity
Pre/post sports
Effects of Muscle Compressions
Decreses muscle resting tone
Decresed muscle guarding
May reset muscle spindle/golgi tendon organ
Increase interstitial fluid exchange which therefore reduces edema.
Increases local circulation: compression of the tissue empties the venous beds; releases lower the Venus pressure and thereby increases capillary flow.
Sedating effect on the nervous system, increases PNS
Application of Muscle Compression
Full palmar contact hands molded to fit contours
No oil, applied over sheets
Therapist sinks hands slowly into the muscle tissue
Contraindications for Muscle compressions
All general and local CI’s
