Muscle Cells Flashcards
What are muscle cells called?
myocytes
What is the sarcolemma?
muscle fiber membrane, surrounds individual muscle fibers
What is the sarcoplasm?
inner material surrounding myofibrils within muscle fiber
What is the sacroplasmic reticulum
transport and storage of calcium
What are the myofibrils?
parallel muscle fibers within sarcoplasm
What are the myofiliments?
myosin and actin, bind to form a myofibril
What is myosin?
thick filaments, A Bands, dark
What is actin?
thin filaments, I bands, light
What is the hierarchy of a muscle (largest to smallest)
- tendon
- muscle
- epimysium
- perimysium (inner material)
- endomysium (covers individual fascicles)
- sarcoplasm (inner material of fascicles)
- muscle fiber
- sarcolemma (surrounds individual muscle fibers)
- myofibrils
What is the H-Zone?
The H zone becomes smaller as the muscle contracts and the sarcomere shortens
What happens if the H-Zone is dysfunctional?
muscle will not contract
What is dystrophin?
a protein located b/w the sarcolemma and myofilaments which holds the fibers together, allows normal muscle contraction
How can someone get muscular dystrophy?
if their cells have a fiber defect, chromosome mutation
What is a prognosis from DMD?
fatal, muscle weakness can affect the heart and diaphragm
What is EXONDYS51?
gene therapy, repairs the gene that makes dystrophin
