Hip, Thigh, and Lower Leg Muscles Flashcards
Where is the adductor magnus located?
posterior and medial fascial compartments of thigh, medial to rectus femoris and vastus lateralis
What is the function of the adductor magnus?
thigh adduction, flexion, extension, external & internal rotation, pelvis stabilization
Where are the biceps femoris located?
posterior thigh, lateral to semitendinosus, superior to gastrocnemius
What is the function of the biceps femoris?
hamstring muscle, flexion and external rotation at knee joint and hip joint
Where is the gluteus maximus located?
posterior pelvic girdle, inferior to gluteus medius
What is the function of the gluteus maximus?
external rotation and extension of thigh at hip joint
Where is the gluteus medius located?
posterior hip, superior to gluteus maximus
What is the function of the gluteus medius?
stabilize pelvis while standing/walking
Where is the sartorius located?
crosses from lateral to medial side of anterior thigh
What is the function of the sartorius?
flexes, abducts, and externally rotates thigh, flexes and internally rotates leg
Where is the rectus femoris located?
runs straight down anterior thigh, medial to vastus lateralis
What is the function of the rectus femoris?
flexes thigh at hip joint, extends at knee joint (muscle of quadriceps)
Where is the tensor fascia latae located?
proximal anterolateral thigh, lateral to gluteus muscles
What is the function of the tensor fascia latae?
assists with movement and stabilization of hip and knee
Where is the vastus lateralis located?
lateral side of thigh, lateral to rectus femoris and vastus medialis
What is the function of the vastus lateralis?
extends lower leg and allows body to rise from squatting (quads)
Where is the vastus medialis located?
anteromedial part of thigh, medial to rectus femoris and vastus lateralis
What is the function of the vastus medialis?
extends knee joint and contributes to correct tracking of patella (quads)
Where is the semitendinosus located?
posterior thigh, medial to biceps femoris, deep to semimembranosus
What is the function of the semitendinosus?
hamstring muscle, works to extend at hip and flex at knee
Where is the semimembranosus located?
medial aspect of posterior thigh, superficial to semitendinosus, medial to biceps femoris
What is the function of the semimembranosus?
hamstring muscle, flexion and internal rotation of knee joint
Where is the gastrocnemius located?
posterior leg, inferior to popliteal region and thigh muscles
What is the function of the gastrocnemius?
plantar flexing of foot at ankle joint and flexing of leg at knee joint
Where is the soleus located?
posterior leg, runs from below knee to heel, lays deep to gastrocnemius
What is the function of the soleus?
plantar flexion, maintains upright posture
Where is the tibialis anterior located?
anterior part of leg, lateral to anterior border of tibia bone
What is the function of the tibialis anterior?
main foot dorsiflexor, inverses foot at subtalar joint, plays a role in gait cycle
