Muscle and Muscular System Flashcards
Only pull, never pushes
Muscles
Major responsibility for producing specific movement
Prime mover (agonist)
Opposes or reverses particular movement
Antagonist
Helps prime movers
Adds extra force to same movement
Reduces undesirable or unnecessary movement
Synergist
Synergist that immobilizes bone or muscle’s origin
Gives prime mover stable base on which to act
Fixator
Muscle that crosses front of joint causes:
Ex. Pectoralis major
Flexion
Muscle that crosses back of joint causes:
Ex. Latissimus dorsi
Extension
Muscle that crosses lateral side of joint causes:
Ex. Latissimus dorsi
Abduction
Muscle that crosses the medial side of joint causes:
Ex. Teres major
Adduction
Bundles of muscle fibers
Fascicles
Fascicles arranged in concentric ring (circular)
Circular fascicle
Broad origin; fascicles converge toward single tendon insertion
Convergent fascicle
Fascicles parallel to long axis of straplike muscle
Parallel fascicle
Spindle-shape muscles with parallel fibers
Fusiform fascicle
Short fascicles attach obliquely to central tendon running length of muscle
Three forms: Unipennate, bipennate, multipennate
Pennate fascicle
