Muscle actions Flashcards
Triceps brachia
extends the ante brachium, stabilizes the shoulder joint, and extends humerus
Plamaris Longus
Flexes the carpus and tenses the palmar fascia
Brachioradialis
Flexes the olecranon/ cubit, assists in pronation and supinantion of the antebrachium.
Coracobrachialis
Flexes and adducts the humerus
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Flexes and adducts the wrist
Pronator teres
Pronates the antebrachium, and assists in flexing the elbow joint
Supraspinatus
Abducts the brachium and acts to stabilize the humeral head
Biceps brachii
Flexes and supinates the antebrachium, flexes the humerus
Extensor carpi ulnaris
Extends the carpus and assist in adduction of hand
Supinator
Supinates the forearm
Infraspinatus
laterally rotates the shoulder and acts to stabilize the humeral head, and abducts the humerus.
Pronator quadratus
Pronates the antebrachium
Extensor carpi radialis
Extends the carpus and abducts the manus
Tensor fasciae later
assists in abduction, medial rotation, and flexion of femur
Subscapularis
Medially rotates the brachium and stabilizes the head of the humerus
Gastrocnemius
Plantar flexes the tarsal joint and assists in flexion of the patellar/knee joint
Sartorius
flexes, laterally rotates, and abducts the hip joint
Flexor digitorum
flexes distal phalanges of lateral four metatarsals
Gluteus Maximus
Extends and laterally rotates femur, extends, laterally rotates thigh, assists in adduction of the hip joint, assists in raising trunk from flexion
Extensor digitorum
extends the digits and the carpus
Extensor digitorum pt.2
extends the phalanges of the seconds through the fifth phalanges, assists in dorsiflexion
Soleus
Plantar flexes the tarsal joint and stabilizes the leg over the foot
Flexor digitorum
Flexes the carpus and digits/phalages 2-5
Flexor carpi radialis
Flexes carpus and abducts manus
Teres major
medially rotates, adducts, and extends the humerus
Deltoid
flexes and medially rotates the brachium, abducts the brachium, and laterally rotates the brachium
Adductor longus
adducts and flexes femur
Gastrocnemius
plantar flexes the tarsal joint and assist in flexion of the patellar/knee joint
Rectus femurs
part of the quadriceps, extends the leg at the knee and flexes the femur at the coxal join
Psoas major
flexes the femur at the coxal joint and flexes vertebral column
Adductor Magnus
adducts and extends femur, assists
Vastus lateralis
part of the quadriceps, extends the leg at the knee and flexes the femur at the coxal joint
Vastus medialis
part of the quadriceps, extends the leg at the knee and flexes the femur at the coxal joint
Vastus intermedialis
part of the quadriceps, extends the leg at the knee and flexes the femur at the coxal joint
External intercostals
elevates the ribs/rib cage
Pectoralis minor
draws scapula forward and inferior, draws rib cage superiorly
Latissimus dorsi
extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm, draws shoulder inferiorly and posteriorly
Internal intercostals
depresses the ribs/rib cage
Rectus abdominis
flexes the vertebral column, compresses abdominal cavity
Trapezius
stabilizes, raises, retracts, and rotates the scapula
Levator scapulae
elevates the scapula and draws it medially, bends neck laterally
External oblique
laterally flexes and rotates vertebral column, both sides flex vertebral column anteriorly,
compresses abdominal cavity
Pectoralis major
protracts scapula, adducts and medially rotates arm, flexes humerus
Diaphragm
flattens on contraction, increasing the volume of the thorax
Scalenes
flexes the neck anteriorly and laterally
Sternocleiodomastoid
bends cervical region/neck laterally and rotates head to the opposite side
Transversus abdomens
constricts the abdomen and supports the abdominal viscera
