Muscle Flashcards
name the three types of muscle found in the body
skeletal, smooth and cardiac
what nervous system is skeletal muscle part of
(somatic or autonomic)
somatic
is skeleton muscle voluntary or involuntary control
voluntary
what structure does skeletal muscle have? striated or un-striated?
striated
what is the function of skeletal muscle?
contract for movement
posture & position
body temp
store nutrients
stabilize joints
what is skeletal muscle composed of?
muscle fibres
what is the structural shape of muscle fibres of skeletal muscle?
elongated striated
Muscle cells are packed with myofibrils. what are myofibrils composed of?
repeating units of myofilaments - gives striated appearance (contraction)
Name the types of myofilament found in myofibrils?
thin filaments composed mostly of actin and thick filaments mostly composed of myosin.
Also contain titin, elastic myofilaments associated with the thick filaments.
what encircles the myofibrils?
Sarcoplasmic reticulum (plasma membrane) and T-tubules
What are sarcomeres?
contractile units of skeletal muscle
name the process that allows sarcomeres to contract
sliding filament mechanism
