What is Mumps caused by?
A
A paramyxovirus

How is Mumps transmitted?
A
- Direct contact via respiratory route
- Can cross placenta (no evidence of congenital malformations)

When is Mumps most commonly seen?
A
Late winter and spring

When is Mumps the most contagious?
A
1 to 2 days before parotid swelling to 5 days after onset of parotid swelling

What is the incubation period for Mumps?
A
16 to 18 days

What are the signs and symptoms of Mumps?
A
- Swelling of one or more salivary glands (parotid gland)
- 1/3 don’t have swelling
- Orchitis - inflammation of the testes (complication after puberty)

How is Mumps diagnosed?
A
- If parotitis present for more than 2 days, serologic testing
- Throat swabs
- IgG antibody titers

What is the treatment for Mumps?
A
- Supportive
- Vaccine even after exposure
