What are the classic symptoms of EBV?

A
  • Fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue lasting 1 to 4 weeks
  • Splenomegaly or hepatic involvement
  • Cardiac or neurological involvement (rare)

How is EBV diagnosed?

A
  • Elevated WBC with 10% atypical lymphocytes
  • Positive “monospot” test (drop of blood to look for antibodies to EBV)
  • Test 5 days after onset of symptoms

How is EBV treated?

A
  • Supportively
  • Typically resolves in 1 to 2 months
  • Lasting longer than 6 months (chronic EBV)
