How is EBV transmitted?
A
Through saliva (kissing disease)

What is the incubation period for EBV?
A
4 to 6 weeks

What are the classic symptoms of EBV?
A
- Fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue lasting 1 to 4 weeks
- Splenomegaly or hepatic involvement
- Cardiac or neurological involvement (rare)

How is EBV diagnosed?
A
- Elevated WBC with 10% atypical lymphocytes
- Positive “monospot” test (drop of blood to look for antibodies to EBV)
- Test 5 days after onset of symptoms

How is EBV treated?
A
- Supportively
- Typically resolves in 1 to 2 months
- Lasting longer than 6 months (chronic EBV)
