Signs

A

Parotid gland swelling and tenderness
- unilateral before becoming bilateral

Parotid gland swelling
Ear ache
Difficulty with chewing/pronouncing words
Prodromal symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Fever
- Malaise
- Muscle ache

Diagnosis

A

Clinical diagnosis
- Oral fluid sample: saliva samples are specify for detecting IgM mumps antibodies

Treatment

A

Conservative management: self limiting condition
School/work absence = 5 days after initial development of parotitis
If in contact with anyone with +ve mumps and not vaccinated offer asap
