Mumbai Case Study Flashcards
Social problems
Around 7.5 million commuters cram themselves into trains every day. 1b6 of the population lives in a slum.
First rate of urbanisation causes widespread poverty, unemployment, poor public health, civic and educational standards for a large part of the population.
Inequality and wealth imbalance (wealthy living in gated communities). Increasing car usage and private ownership leads to congestion.
Environmental problems
7000 metric tons of waste is produced/ day.
The government doesn’t encourage for cycling or separation. Toxic nitric oxide and nitrogen oxide levels are three times the safe limit (252 microgrammes/ m3).
Waste is just dumped on sites to decay, which is very bad for the environment and can spread diseases.
Economic problems
High levels of unemployment.
Workers in the informal sector don’t pay tax for their income. Housing prices are very expensive (flats cost $1-3 million).
