Multiple Sclerosis- MS Flashcards
Typical location for MS lesions:
- CC
- U fibers- juxtacortical
- TL
- Brainstem
- Cerebellum
- Spinal cord
Which sequence is best to look at spinal cord lesions in MS?
PD
What are the Dawson’s fingers?
Ovoid lesions perpendicular to ventricles.
Whats the lesion?
mass lesion with incomplete ring enhancement on post contrast images
Tumefactive MS
Intraparenchymal lesion
Ddx bwn glioma and demyelination?
Glioma: closed ring enhancement
Demyelination: Open ring
What is the lesion?
alternating bands of demyelination and myelin preservation in whorl like configuration:
balo Concentric sclerosis
What is the lesion?
This is a demyelinating disease in which the optic nerves and spinal cord are usually involved.
Often there are few T2-lesions in the brain.
Neuromyelitis optica
This drug increases the risk of PML:
Natalizumab- used in treatment of MS

Findings in NMO
T2 lesions in the brain
Spinal cord lesions with low T1 and swelling of the cord
What is the lesion?
This is a monophonic immune mediated demyelinating disease usually in children post infection/ vaccination
ADEM - Acute Disseminating Encephalomyelitis
Where is usually affected by ADEM?
Cortical grey matter and deep grey matter of the BG and thalami.
Typical findings of ADEM
multifocal lesions in WM and BG 10-14 days post infection or vaccination
Typical findings in Lyme disease
2-3 mm lesions simulating MS in a patient with skin rash and influenza like illness.
high signal in spinal cord and enhancement of CN7
Key findings in PML
Space occupying non enhancing WML in U fibres- unlike HIV/CMV
Caused by JC virus
